Southern Crust
Southern Crust is a long-term photography project by Kazuaki Ono, a photographer based in Sydney. Since 2023, Ono has also been the head baker and owner of AKIPAN, a bakery he founded in Sydney.
This dual perspective forms the foundation of Southern Crust. Ono visits bakeries on foot, tastes the bread himself, and approaches each place through direct, physical experience.
The project explores Australian bakery culture through landscape, environment, and the presence of bread. Each image places a loaf outside the bakery—into coastlines, cities, deserts, and regional towns—allowing the land itself to become part of the story.
Photographed with intention rather than documentation, the images present bread not only as food, but as craft, culture, and a reflection of place.
